Resident Research
As a large academic medical department, the Weill Cornell Department of Medicine is heavily involved in biomedical research activities. Much of the cutting edge work is done in collaboration with our neighboring institutions, Rockefeller University, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and the Hospital for Special Surgery. With funding from the NIH Clinical and Translational Science Award, support for multi-institutional partnerships has accelerated the clinical application of scientific discoveries. The Department of Medicine plays a key role in many of these activities.
In addition, the residency program core curriculum includes didactic sessions on basic research methods to help residents understand how to approach a unique hypothesis. Within the guidelines of the American Board of Internal Medicine, the residency program allows for up to 3 months (13.5 weeks) of dedicated research time during the 36 months of training. The Department promotes academic endeavors and interaction with research faculty through its annually updated Directory of Research Opportunities for Residents. The Directory lists the extensive research opportunities available in the department complete with faculty contact information for all those interested in mentoring resident research projects and is indexed by area of research for easy searching.

The department encourages every resident to attend one national conference during the course of the three-year training program. The Scientific Meeting Fund provides up to $1500 per resident once during their training to fund registration and travel to a meeting. In 2010-11, more than 20 residents conducted research projects that were submitted for competition in the David E. Rogers Memorial Award. The four finalists for this award present their work to the entire department at a special medical grand rounds that is held each May.
