Internal Medicine Residency Program at
Weill Cornell Medical College

Welcome to the NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Internal Medicine Residency Program.

NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center is home to one of the premiere internal medicine residency programs in the country. We invite you to browse our website to help you understand the rich learning environment that awaits you on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. We are adjacent to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Rockefeller University, and the Hospital for Special Surgery and take advantage of the strong collaborations across institutions.

Residents in the Weill Cornell Medical College Department of Medicine spend about 90 percent of their time providing care within the NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell system but rotate through valuable rotations at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and the Hospital for Special Surgery. In addition, the research activities of the department extend across all three hospitals as well as the prestigious Rockefeller University.

Our tradition of excellence in clinical care, biomedical research, and medical education provides an incomparable opportunity for those in the NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Internal Medicine Residency Program to learn from some of academic medicine’s greatest physicians in all specialties of medicine. The Weill Cornell Department of Medicine hosts three unique training tracks within the internal medicine residency program:

We invite you to keep reading to learn more about some of the key features of the NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Internal Medicine Residency Program and what sets us apart from other programs:

Categorical Program

The categorical program is a traditional 36-month training program that balances inpatient and outpatient medicine across all of the specialties within internal medicine and prepares trainees for careers in general internal medicine practice, hospital medicine, or subspecialty fellowships. In the past three years, more than 90% of the graduates of this program have pursued fellowships.

Primary Care Track

The primary care program is also a 36- month residency leading to board certification in internal medicine but provides a focused curriculum on outpatient medicine with a full six months of the second (PGY2) and six months of the third year (PGY3) in the ambulatory setting. Residents in this track learn not only how to care for adult patients across the spectrum of internal medicine but also gain experience in the inner workings of running a practice and are introduced to the role of academic general internists through scholarly projects and annual attendance at the Society for General Internal Medicine meeting.

Medical Research Track

As defined by the American Board of Internal Medicine, the medical research track provides an accelerated internal medicine residency program for those seeking a career as a physician scientist. This 24-month curriculum provides rigorous training in clinical medicine and allows trainees to reach subspecialty training by their third year (PGY3). The long-term commitment, however, is for an additional two years to be added at the end of subspecialty training for the sole purpose of research and establishing an academic career. Most of the candidates in this program are MD/PhD residents with a mature career plan who have already established their scientific niche.

The NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Internal Medicine Residency program has undergone some changes in the past year so please peruse our website to make yourself familiar with all that we have to offer.
