Medical Research Track
The Medical Research Track within the Department of Medicine is an established program that recruits the best and brightest candidates who are interested in a career as a physician scientist. This 24-month curriculum provides accelerated clinical training to facilitate early entry into subspecialty training with the promise for extended research time at the end of training. Candidates with advanced degrees and a clear scientific niche for research are provided an opportunity to interview for both internal medicine training as well as for research opportunities.
Highlights of the Medical Research Track
- Devoted mentors to facilitate exploration of research options within Weill Cornell Medical College, The Rockefeller University, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and Hospital for Special Surgery
- Personalized career development activities during outpatient practice time
- Dedicated Journal Club and research presentations by participants, research lab directors and division chiefs
- Medical Research Elective time for meeting faculty and learning about various laboratories’ areas of focus.
As approved through the research pathway of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM), this track provides extensive, coordinated training in clinical sciences and basic biomedical research. The first two years are identical to the standard residency program with the addition of career development workshops and personalized academic mentorship. In addition, candidates within the Medical Research Track can spend elective time doing research and exploring laboratory opportunities. By the PGY3 year of training, the Medical Research residents are fully immersed in their subspeciality field of choice and commit to spend 80 percent of their time doing full-time research and 20 percent of their time after they complete their subspecialty clinical training.
Matched applicants are assured a fellowship position in their chosen subspecialty or they may choose to pursue fellowship elsewhere. Participating fellowships for the 2011-2012 application cycle within this track include hematology/oncology, infectious diseases, pulmonary/critical care, rheumatology, cardiology, health services (general medicine), gastroenterology, geriatrics, and endocrinology.
